Poshmark, Mercari and Depop: Photo Sizes and Watermarks (2026)

Published 16 October 2026 · by Tekiba

The three are often lumped together as "square photo" apps. On their own pages, as we read them, only Poshmark states a shape, and it is now 3:4 portrait, not square. Only Mercari mentions watermarks, in its list of prohibited conduct. None of the three asks for a pixel size beyond one tip from Poshmark. SignetDrop pads and resizes a batch in your browser: ten photos at a time for free, up to 2048px.

Poshmark: portrait covers, and a square tip left over

Poshmark's blog post A New Look for Listing Photos (March 2026) announced the change: "Cover photos now display in portrait (3:4) instead of square (1:1)." It also says older listings need nothing done: "If you have listings with photos that were taken before this recent change, no action is needed." Shoppers can still open a listing and see the original photos.

Poshmark's help article How to list, read on the publication date above, says you can add up to 16 photos and carries a tip: "Images should be sized to 1000 x 1000 pixels for optimal quality." That is a square, and it reads like advice written before the switch to portrait. A square photo still works on Poshmark; it is simply framed into the portrait cover. We found no Poshmark rule about watermarks in either page.

Poshmark portrait photos without cropping goes through the portrait change in more detail.

Mercari: twelve photos, and a line about watermarks

Mercari's US help article Creating a Listing says: "You can add up to 12 photos to your listing." It recommends natural light, a plain background and a photo of every side, and notes that the first photo is the first thing shoppers see. It gives no shape and no pixel size. (Mercari's Japanese service publishes its own advice, which does not apply to the US app.)

Mercari's Prohibited Conduct page lists, among things not to do in a listing:

Using watermarks, symbols or other representation that you are a preferred seller or trusted user or any other statement not specifically curated by Mercari

The line is aimed at sellers dressing their listings up as officially endorsed, and whether a plain shop name in the corner counts is not spelled out. Mercari's reading is the one that matters, and it is Mercari's to apply. The cautious choice is a clean set for Mercari. The same page also rules out stock photos and photos you did not take yourself.

Depop: four photos in the app, eight on the web, no stated shape

Depop's help article How to list an item says to "Add up to four photos and one video" in the app and "Add up to eight photos" on Depop.com. Its listing-on-web article says you can choose a cover image and crop a photo after uploading it. Its stock images article asks that every photo be your own. A search of Depop's help centre for photo size, square and watermark found no page that states a shape, a pixel size or a rule on marks.

That silence is worth taking at face value: if a site does not state a shape, a photo with room around the item is the one least likely to lose something when the app frames it.

One batch that suits all three

Because no two of these pages agree, the useful choice is a shape that survives being framed differently, at a size none of them will object to.

The photo counts differ too, which matters when you plan one set for every app. Poshmark takes up to sixteen, Mercari twelve, and Depop four in its app or eight on its website, so the photos you would put first on Poshmark may be the only ones a Depop listing from the app carries. Put the cover photo first in the batch, the item from the front and whole, then the details and any flaws. Mercari says the first photo is the first thing shoppers see, and a numbered set keeps that order when you upload it.

  1. Choose the photos and drag them onto the tool. They are read by the page and never leave your machine.

  2. Size them. On the free version, set Longest edge to 2048. A 3000×2000 photo becomes 2048×1365, the whole photo kept and nothing enlarged. The free version stops at 2048px on the longest edge.

  3. Pick the shape, without cropping. On the paid version, a set shape adds a plain border instead of cutting. For Poshmark's portrait cover, a 3000×2000 photo sized to 2000px on its long edge and then set to 3:4 comes out as 2000×2667. For one square set to use on Mercari and Depop too, a 3000×2000 photo sized to 2000px on its long edge and then set to 1:1 comes out as 2000×2000; to match Poshmark's own tip exactly, a square sized to 1000px on its long edge and then set to 1:1 comes out as 1000×1000.

  4. Decide on the mark. The text mark starts ticked with a sample name. For Mercari, untick it. For Poshmark and Depop, which say nothing about marks, it is your call: keep it small, low in opacity and away from the edges, where a crop would take it. Then press Process and download ZIP. By default the copies carry no EXIF, so no location goes up with them.

What this does not do

It shapes the files; it does not list them, and it cannot see how each app frames a photo after upload. How each site frames and polices listing photos is its decision, not ours, and any of these pages can change. Set shapes and output above 2048px are part of the paid version, $29 once, with the full split on the pricing panel. SignetDrop never writes its own name onto your photos.

Open SignetDrop and prepare one set for all three. The photos stay on your machine.

Questions

Are Poshmark, Mercari and Depop photos still square?

Not all of them. Poshmark moved its cover photos from square to a 3:4 portrait in March 2026. Mercari's US help pages and Depop's help centre, as we read them, do not state a shape at all. Square is still a safe choice on the two that say nothing, but it is no longer what Poshmark shows.

Can I watermark photos on Mercari?

Mercari's prohibited conduct list includes using watermarks, in a line about representing yourself as a preferred or trusted seller. Whether a plain shop name falls under it is not spelled out, so the cautious reading is to leave marks off Mercari photos.

What size should photos be for these three sites?

Only Poshmark names one: its help page suggests 1000 x 1000 pixels, a square that predates its move to portrait. Mercari's US pages and Depop's help centre give no pixel size. A batch at 2000 pixels on the long side, padded rather than cropped, suits all three.
