Etsy Listing Photo Size and Watermarks (2026)

Published 16 October 2026 · by Tekiba

Etsy's help page asks for listing photos at least 2000 pixels on both sides, a first photo that is landscape or square, and room around the product for three different crops. It does not ban watermarks, but it does not recommend them either, and a marked photo misses out on some of Etsy's promotion. SignetDrop resizes the batch in your browser: ten photos at a time for free, up to 2048px, with the photos staying on your machine.

What Etsy's image page asks for

We read Etsy's help article Requirements and Best Practices for Images in Your Etsy Shop on the publication date above. On size, Etsy says:

We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more. Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches.

Two figures, then, and they do different jobs. 2000 pixels is the recommendation, and it is for both sides, not just the longer one. 635 pixels is the floor for the first photo, below which Etsy says the listing shows lower in searches. Etsy adds that the page is not only about size: it says files over 1MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection, and that "Images may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files." In other words, the file you upload is not the file a buyer sees; Etsy keeps its own copies, sized for phones.

Landscape, square, and the three crops

On shape, Etsy's page gives a rule for the first photo and a warning about thumbnails. The rule: "The first photo in a listing should be horizontal (landscape) or square." The warning: "Make sure that your thumbnail images have enough of a border that they can be cropped to square, portrait, and landscape thumbnails without losing some of the product." Etsy says a thumbnail adjustment tool on the listing form lets you preview those crops, and that your subject should be clear in all 3 views used across Etsy.

The same thumbnails section then lists its recommendations, and one of them is "Avoid square crops. Upload horizontal or landscape images," because a horizontal picture uses more of the thumbnail frame. So a square first photo is allowed, but for thumbnails Etsy leans towards landscape. The page also says your first photo sets the shape of the ones that follow, so keeping a listing's photos one shape is part of the same advice. What it does not do is name a ratio. You will see 4:3 in a lot of advice about Etsy; it is one landscape shape that fits the page's wording, but the page itself does not ask for it.

What the page does make plain is that a tight crop is the risk. A product that fills the frame edge to edge loses its ends in the square view and its top and bottom in the landscape one. Leaving space around it, either when you take the photo or by adding a plain border afterwards, is what keeps it whole in all three.

Watermarks on Etsy

Etsy's separate article How to Protect Listing Images addresses marks directly:

While some sellers use watermarks, we generally wouldn’t recommend them. Using watermarks makes photos unsuitable for features within Etsy (like Etsy Finds emails), and ineligible for off-site advertising programs like Google Shopping.

So a watermark is allowed but costs you something, and Etsy suggests putting your brand in the photo instead (a logo on the packaging, say) rather than as an overlay. The same article suggests uploading images "around 1500 pixels wide" if you are worried about copying, which pulls against the 2000 pixels recommendation above. Etsy publishes both; which matters more depends on what you sell. Someone selling prints of their own artwork might accept a smaller file; someone selling a ceramic mug probably wants the detail.

If you do mark your photos, how the mark looks after Etsy's processing comes down to two things. Size it to the photo, not in pixels: SignetDrop sets a text mark's size as a share of the photo's width and its margin as a share of the shorter edge, so a mixed batch gets the same proportion on each. And keep it out of the edges: a mark tucked into a corner is the first thing the square and landscape crops cut off. Low opacity over a plain area survives compression better than thin text over busy detail. Can you watermark eBay or Etsy listing photos? sets Etsy's position beside eBay's, which is stricter.

Resizing a batch for Etsy in your browser

  1. Choose the photos. Drag them onto the tool, or press Choose photos. They are read by the page itself; nothing is sent anywhere.

  2. Pick the size. On the free version, set Longest edge to 2048. A 3000×2000 photo becomes 2048×1365: the long side clears Etsy's 2000 pixels, the short side does not, and the whole photo is kept. Nothing is ever enlarged, so a small photo stays small. The free version stops at 2048px on the longest edge.

  3. Add room for the crops, if you need it. On the paid version, a set shape adds a plain border instead of cutting anything off. Since Etsy leans towards landscape thumbnails, a 3000×2000 photo sized to 2667px on its long edge and then set to 4:3 comes out as 2667×2000: still landscape, with both sides at Etsy's figure. If you prefer square, which Etsy also allows for the first photo, a 3000×2000 photo sized to 2000px on its long edge and then set to 1:1 comes out as 2000×2000, with white above and below. Make Etsy listing photos square without cropping walks through the square case.

  4. Decide on the mark, then run it. The text mark starts ticked with a sample name in it: untick it for a clean set, or type your shop name. Press Process and download ZIP; the archive is assembled in the tab and, by default, the photos inside carry no EXIF, so no GPS location goes up with them.

What this does not do

It shapes the file you hand over. It does not upload to Etsy for you, and it cannot see or change what Etsy does with a photo once it is there; the final say on your listing photos is Etsy's, not ours, and Etsy can change its pages. Squaring, set shapes and output larger than 2048px are part of the paid version, $29 once with the full split on the pricing panel. Either way, SignetDrop never writes its own name onto your photos.

Open SignetDrop and set the longest edge for your Etsy batch. The photos stay on your machine.

Questions

Does Etsy require a 4:3 photo?

Not on the pages we read. Etsy's image page asks for a first photo that is horizontal or square, and for enough room around the product that it survives a square, a portrait and a landscape crop. 4:3 turns up in a lot of advice about Etsy, and it is one landscape shape that meets the page's wording, but the page itself names no ratio.

Will Etsy remove a listing because the photo has a watermark?

The page we read does not say that. It says Etsy generally would not recommend watermarks, and that a watermarked photo is unsuitable for features within Etsy and ineligible for off-site advertising programs like Google Shopping. That is a cost to weigh, not a ban, and the policy is Etsy's to change.

Can the free version make a photo Etsy's recommended size?

Partly. The free version writes up to 2048px on the longest edge, so the long side can clear Etsy's 2000 pixels, but on a photo that is not square the short side ends up below it. Squaring or setting a shape, and going above 2048px, are paid settings.
