Check a Photo's EXIF and Location Data
Beta · by Tekiba
Drop a photo to see what it carries besides the picture: the EXIF block, a location if there is one, the camera maker's private notes, a small copy of the original, XMP, a colour profile and text notes. It is read in your browser and shown here; nothing is uploaded and nothing is changed. To remove what it finds, SignetDrop writes clean copies.
Drop photos here
JPEG, PNG and WebP. HEIC is recognised but not read.
To remove it: open SignetDrop. It redraws each photo in your browser and writes a new copy that carries no EXIF — ten at a time for free — and leaves your original as it was.
What is read
The EXIF block, and inside it the location (GPS), the camera and lens, dates, serial numbers, the maker's notes and the small copy of the original kept for previews; XMP, which editing programs write and which can hold coordinates or a city; IPTC place names; a colour profile; text notes; and, in a JPEG, a second picture stored after the first. Values are shown here and go nowhere else.
Is my photo uploaded to check it?
No. The page reads the file inside your browser and shows the result on the same page; there is no server for it to go to. Open your browser's developer tools, choose the Network tab and drop a photo: no request carries it.
Where does a photo keep its location?
Mostly in the GPS part of its EXIF block, as latitude and longitude. Editing programs can also write coordinates or a city into XMP, and some write a city into IPTC. This page reads all three and says which one it found.
If this page finds nothing, is the photo clean?
It means none of the places this page reads holds anything: EXIF, XMP, IPTC, a colour profile, text notes and a second picture stored after the first, in JPEG, PNG and WebP. A file can hide things elsewhere, and its name is not read at all. A copy written fresh from the pixels is the surer route.
How do I remove what it found?
SignetDrop, on the front page, redraws each photo in your browser and writes a new copy that carries no EXIF, ten at a time for free. Your original is left as it was.
