Image Sizes for Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, eBay and Etsy (2026)

Published 8 October 2026 · by Tekiba

Each marketplace says something different, and most say less than the advice sites that quote them. Mercari (Japan) shows every photo square and gives 720×720 as an example size. Yahoo! Auctions takes up to 5 MB a photo and shrinks anything over 1200 pixels. Rakuma crops to a square and names no size. eBay sets a floor of 500 pixels on the longest side; Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on both. SignetDrop has a preset for each that sets those in your browser — ten photos at a time for free.

The five, side by side

Read on each marketplace's own page on 8 October 2026 (Etsy's figures are from the day before: its help pages refused the request that day). "Not stated" means the page we read says nothing about it — not that there is no rule.

Mercari (Japan)

The page is a column on Mercari's Japanese site, メルカリ出品で使う画像のサイズは? (published by Mercari, Inc.). It says the photos in search results are all square — "画像の形はすべて正方形" — and suggests a square of moderate size, giving two examples:

「720×720」「640×640」など正方形かつ大きすぎず小さすぎないサイズがおすすめです。

That is "720×720, 640×640 and the like: square, and neither too large nor too small". It is a suggestion with examples, not a requirement, and the page names no file-size limit. It is also Mercari Japan only: Mercari's US marketplace is a different service.

Yahoo! Auctions (Japan)

Yahoo! JAPAN's help page 商品情報入力【画像のアップロード】 is the most specific of the five:

1枚あたり5MB以内の、JPEG形式、またはGIF形式の画像を10枚まで掲載できます

— up to 10 images, each a JPEG or GIF of 5 MB or less — and

高さ、または幅が1200ピクセルを超える画像は、縮小して掲載されます

— an image more than 1200 pixels high or wide is shrunk for display. So a larger photo is accepted but not shown larger. The page says nothing about shape.

Rakuma

Rakuma's own listing guide, 初めてのラクマ出品ガイド, says you can choose up to 10 photos — "最大10枚まで選択できます" — and shows the app cropping each one to a square ("切り抜き(正方形)"). It names no pixel size, file size or format.

eBay and Etsy

eBay's picture policy asks for at least 500 pixels on the longest side and does not allow watermarks of any type or added borders. Etsy's image requirements recommend at least 2000 pixels in width and height, and its other help page advises against watermarks. Both are covered quote by quote in Can you watermark eBay or Etsy listing photos?

What the presets do

Pick a marketplace under Marketplace preset above the drop zone, or open it straight from here: Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions, Rakuma, eBay, Etsy. Each sets only what its page supports:

For Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions and Rakuma, a watermark you have switched on goes to the bottom-right corner, 4% of the short edge in; none of those pages says anything about watermarks, so that is our choice, not theirs. Every preset also leaves out the location: the output carries no EXIF, and Strip GPS stays on if you turn EXIF back on in the paid version. The squares are a paid setting; on the free version that part is left out and the note under the menu says so.

Open SignetDrop, choose a marketplace preset and drop your photos. The pictures stay on your disk.

What this page does not do

It reports what five marketplaces' own pages said on one day. Marketplaces change these rules from time to time, and an app can treat a photo differently from what its help page describes. Before a large batch, check the marketplace's current page.

Where the free version stops

The free version does ten photos at a time, up to 2048px on the longest edge, with no account, and it does not write our name onto your photos: the only mark that comes out is yours. The paid version is $29 once, not a subscription, and lifts the limits we impose. The full split is on the pricing panel.

Questions

Is this about Mercari in Japan or in the US?

Japan. The page read here is a column on Mercari's Japanese site, jp-news.mercari.com, published by Mercari, Inc. Mercari's US marketplace is a separate service with its own help pages, and nothing on this page is about it.

Does a smaller file sell better?

None of the five pages says so. What they do say is narrower: Yahoo! Auctions shrinks a photo that is over its display size and takes files up to its limit; Mercari's column says a photo that is too big or too small can look worse. Past those lines, a smaller file is only quicker to upload.

Should I put my shop name on the photo?

On eBay, no: its picture policy does not allow watermarks of any type. Etsy allows them but advises against them. The Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions and Rakuma pages read here say nothing about watermarks either way, so that is a judgement about your shop rather than a rule we could quote. In SignetDrop's presets for those three, a mark you have switched on goes to the bottom-right corner; one you have not stays off.
